Hooks Book Events

  • Hooks Book Events goes to Chicago!

Hooks Book Events dodged two snow storms to breeze in and out of the Windy City this week. The reason? We managed to get Judge Richard Posner and Professor Gary Becker in the same room at the Chicago HQ of the Securities and Exchange Commission. As you know, Posner and Becker have a very famous blog, http://uchicagolaw.typepad.com/beckerposner/ and are two cherished dare I say Rock Stars of American public intellectualism. Wearing sensible shoes and big smiles, the Judge and the Professor discussed a variety of topics from full body scans to Trans Fats.. yes they disagree on Trans Fats.. read the blog to find out why! You may also want to check out their jointly authored book based on the blog, Uncommon Sense to read more about topics where they agree and more interestingly where they disagree. It was an honor to be a part of this event. PPH...

  • August, 2009 HBE Heads South for Four Days in 'BAMA!

Just back from a trip to Alabama .. Livingston, Eutaw, Demopolis, Birmingham and Bessemer to be specific! Have been down South researching a distant relative Miss Ruby Pickens Tartt, nationally renowned painter, writer and folklorist who collaborated with the WPA Federal Writers' Project and John Lomax during the Depression. Miss Ruby was a real wonder and has occupied a corner in my mind for some time now; so I thought I better head South to check it out. You can Google her to learn more about her recordings, writings and paintings.. she was ahead of her time and a real inspiration to many while she was alive and even now. She would have been pleased that I took some pals from Birmingham to Bessemer on Saturday night to a bona fide juke joint, Gip's Place where I managed to meet Mr. Gipson (88 years cool - grave digger by day, bluesman by night) in his back yard singing and playing in his tin roofed shack. Music was blaring, bourbon was flowing, fish were frying and dancing was going on! Even good buddy and writer, Diane McWhorter made the scene as she was home in 'Bama working on her next bo...

  • IN THE NEWS: Motley Fool.com features Hooks Book Events author Chris Anderson

MOTLEY FOOL.COM, July 17, 2009 — In an article entitled "A New Business Model for the Digital Age," posted today on the "Motley Fool Stock Advisor, reporter Jennifer Schonberger writes:"Since 2002, David and Tom Gardner have returned 32.89% while the S&P 500 returned -8.78%. There is no question that traditional media is in disarray right now. Major news outlets from CBS (NYSE: CBS) to Gannett (NYSE: GCI) to The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) are being forced to transition to a different model because of the underlying economics of their mediums (in most cases, a digital model).""But transitions to digital by media and other types of companies have left many questioning what the magic formula for profits is. At a recent event sponsored by Hooks Books and The Motley Fool, Chris Anderson, editor of Wired magazine and author of the new book Free: The Future of a Radical Price, offered a solution to the conundrum."Click here to read more.

  • July 7-HBE Helps Launch FREE with Chris Anderson

Chris Anderson (Wired's Editor-in-Chief) was in town last week to launch his new book FREE:The Future of a Radical Price. HBE was there selling the not so free version of the book at Google DC and at the Motley Fool HQ in Alexandria. As you might have heard or read, the book has stirred some controversy around the use of Wikipedia material and more importantly around the overall premise of the book as seen in Malcolm Gladwell's review in the New Yorker (www.newyorker.com)( HBE highly recommends your checking out Malcolm's review!) As booksellers we like the controversy which we hope will boost sales. Yes, you can download the material on line for "free" but if you get sucked into Chris' "freemium" concept and you want to buy the book, please do so from a good independent store near you. (PPH)...

  • Hooks Book Events at sweetgreen with Bon Appetit's Barbara Fairchild

Wish you’d all been able to join us at sweetgreen on June 5th for the book signing party with Bon Appetit editor and cookbook author Barbara Fairchild. Sweetgreen’s owners and creators Jonathan Neman, Nicolas Jammet and Nathaniel Ru showed their entrepreneurial flair and social networking skills as 80 guests piled in to their restaurant for the two hour event! (Check out some great pics from the evening: sweetgreen.com/blog.)Barbara (pictured here with my daughter, aspiring chef Kailin Otsuki) was besieged by the twenty-somethings who asked her advice on entertaining, purchasing kitchen equipment (“buy the best saucepans you can afford…”), to which are the best cuts of meat. She graciously answered each and every question, and posed for photographs with anyone who asked — including Kailin. Parked out front was the Honest Tea van (Nic’s twin brother is the National Field Marketing Manager for that growing firm), as was the sweetflowmobile – sweetgreen’s new frozen yogu...
