SPRING GREETINGS from Hooks Book Events!
We are finally thawing out here in our Nation’s Capital — undaunted by blizzards, wind, ice and rain, we produced some fantastic events for our clients over the last few months.
Our winter highlights include multiple events with Dan Pink discussing his NYT best selling book, Drive, a trip to Chicago with the SEC to host Judge Richard Posner and Professor Gary Becker (Uncommon Sense) and back to DC with Meg Whitman (The Power of Many) and Andy McAfee (Enterprise 2.0). In March, our pal (and Nobel Laureate), George Akerlof was in town for Identity Economics, and we launched our own “Tett Offensive” on DC with our new favorite Gillian Tett, (Fools Gold) who managed four events in a day and a half. Gillian, currently based in London, was just named US Managing Editor for the Financial Times and will be moving stateside in the fall. This means more opportunities for us to work with her, and to bring her to your organization!
Spring events are already off to a fantastic start. Our clients are thrilled to be hosting Steve Forbes (How Capitalism Will Save Us); Ted Leonsis (The Business of Happiness), Roger Nierenberg (Maestro), Nathanial Philbrick (The Last Stand), Liaquat Ahamed (Lords of Finance) and the effervescent Lee Woodruff (_Perfectly Imperfect*). Give us a call; some of these authors may have time on their schedules for an event with your staff or clients!
Our first public event of the year is on the calendar.
On May 14th, we welcome back Dr. Muhammad Yunus to DC to discuss his new book Building Social Business.
In keeping with our model of giving back to support EDUCATION and MICRO LENDING, we will donate a portion of the event proceeds to FONKOZE (www.fonkoze.org) . Fonkoze is Haiti’s Alternative Bank for the Organized Poor; the largest micro-finance institution offering a full range of financial services to the rural-based poor in Haiti.
*Tickets for Dr. Yunus’ event will go on sale on April 6th so please check our
website for more details.*If you are interested in hosting one of the many thought leaders we are bringing to the DC or Boston area in your office for employee or client events, please contact us. And do visit www.hooksbookevents.com for more details and to learn about both our upcoming and past author events.
We hope to see you May 14th with Dr. Yunus…
Yours,

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HAPPY NEW DECADE from Hooks Book Events!
We hope that you had a warm and restful holiday. Hooks Book Events is already gearing up for an amazing year filled with new ideas, great books and charming writers! Our 2010 calendar is filling up; please check out our site (www.hooksbookevents.com) to see who we are bringing to private events in DC, Boston and Chicago!
A Quick Look Back
2009 was quite a year for us and we are grateful to all those who helped us make it happen-our clients, the writers with their fresh ideas, our friends in the publishing world, our wonderful team who help us produce events and our two bookstore partners, Politics & Prose in Washington DC and the Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, MA. A big thank you to all!Last year we jumped into the public event business with gusto. Our team learned a great deal and we could not help but notice that the 2009 event “bookends” set the tone for what HBE believes in and supports. In February, we welcomed Dr. Muhammad Yunus (Creating a World without Poverty) and we closed in December with Greg Mortenson (Stones into Schools) – both were sell-outs and drew amazing interest and support. Both men are working tirelessly to educate and support women and girls of all ages in impoverished and dangerous parts of the world. It was an honor to work with them and we plan to continue supporting their ideas -*small loans over bailouts and books over bombs!*
A Preview of 2010!

Our fall book season is off to a roaring start with lots of great new titles, and some incredible private and public events.
We kicked off the month with the September 8th event at the Avalon Theater in D.C. with “NurtureShock” authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. New York Times’ bestselling author, Dan Pink, led them in a lively Q&A, and more than 100 area parents were captivated by their conversation.
Po and Ashley’s argument: when it comes to children, we’ve mistaken good intentions for good ideas. With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis they demonstrate that many of modern society’s strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring because key twists in the science have been overlooked.
As luck would have it, the authors were the cover story of Newsweek on the same day as our event. They wrote, “We have this image that friendships in schools today are all High School Musical – effortless racial harmony. But the cross-race friendships seen in HSM are just about as true to life as teens bursting into choreographed song during hoops practice. Read the entire article here: www.newsweek.com
It’s fascinating stuff, and just another example of the high caliber of authors we are privileged to bring to our public and private events. You won’t believe the other high-profile authors we’ve booked! Please keep checking our site for updates and ticket sales.
We’ll look forward to seeing you soon!

With our team of great women by our sides, we have been working to produce some very interesting events in the last month. We made headlines on April 27 when we brought Cokie Roberts to the Greater Washington Board of Trade to speak about the revised and expanded version of “We Are Our Mother’s Daughters.” Washington Business Journal reporter Jennifer Nycz-Conner was on the scene and the next day wrote:“If you ever have a chance to hear Cokie Roberts speak, take it.” Click on the link to read the entire article
We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we also brought Cokie to the April 20 Excellence in Government conference where she was the keynote speaker. Federal News Radio was on the scene and interviewed Cokie – then turned the microphone on Perry Hooks, who shared her thoughts on the importance of intellectual and emotional engagement in the federal work force. The show aired Friday, April 24 and can be heard on www.federalnewsradio.com
Below you’ll find some of the other great events we have planned for May and beyond. We hope you’ll attend our public events – and if your organization is looking to host an enlightening and intellectually invigorating session with one of our authors let us know. [Scroll down below to see the list of bestselling authors we have booked through July, and also check out our Upcoming Events on our website.]
We leave you this month with a parting thought: During World War II, the British government printed a series of posters meant to instill confidence. Our favorite is “Keep Calm and Carry On.” Cheers to that! See you in June.

Greetings from Perry and Loretta! We had a great time in March celebrating Women’s History Month. On the 25th, we brought the amazing Gerda Lerner (who actually helped found Women’s History Month), to speak at the Executive Women in Government conference (EWG).
At 88, Gerda is an amazing, formidable embodiment of 20th century history. Armed with her ever-present cup of tea, she enthralled us with her stories of her early days as a prisoner in the Austrian jail, her experience with the McCarthy-era black list, women’s activism, and more. Gerda has seen and survived it all and we were honored to listen as she shared her wisdom with the dynamic crowd of top women in government. (See more about the EWG conference below.)
Speaking of making history, we checked in with Dexter Filkins who was in Rome, en route to Kabul, to see how the young Afghan women were doing in the Marwais School. Dexter has raised more than $22,000 (up from $8,000) to help the girls recover from the Taliban attack and to purchase supplies for the school. He promises to keep us posted. To contribute to his efforts, email him: Filkins@nytimes.com.
It’s official! We are going to be hosting fabulous events at The Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown. Our first event will be a luncheon on “May 19 from noon to 1:30 with Lee Woodruff*, author of Perfectly Imperfect. You’ll remember that Lee’s husband, Bob Woodruff, is the TV journalist who was co-anchor of the ABC News and appeared on World News Tonight and was nearly killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Join us for an intimate conversation with Lee at this exclusive. Tickets are $70, which includes a four-course lunch and a signed copy of Lee’s new book. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Lee’s foundation, Remind.org: http://remind.org. A limited number of seats are available. For more information or to buy your ticket send an email to: reservations@hooksbookevents.com.
Don’t forget to check out our upcoming “APRIL and MAY BOOK EVENTS.* Even more are listed on our website. Remember that many of the writers that we book do have time to come to your organization – so send us an email if you’d like to set up a session.
We’ll look forward to talking to you again via our e-news blast in May. To stay on top of what we’re up to this month, check out our new blog: http://hooksbookevents.blogspot.com.
MARCH 2009: News from HooksBookEvents · Wednesday March 04, 2009
Greetings from Perry and Loretta! As always, we are busy helping to spread the good ideas tucked between the covers of some of the country’s bestsellers.
This March we are launching a new concept – BOOK SALONS, where we bring wonderful authors right into people’s homes for a short reading, a Q&A session, and some good wine and hors d’oeuvres. See more on that below. And do let us know when you’d like to book a Salon for your friends.
GIVING BACK continues to be a big part of our mission, and, as you’ll see below we are supporting the work of New York Times reporter Dexter Filkins, author of The Forever War. You may have heard of the work he’s doing on behalf of Shamsia Hussein, the Afghan girl at the Mirwais School who was burned in an acid attack by the Taliban in Afghanistan – a child who had acid thrown on her just for attending school. We felt compelled to send money, and encourage you do, as well.
Don’t forget to check out our upcoming MARCH and APRIL EVENTS – and even more are listed on our website. Remember that many of these writers we book will have time to come to your organization, so send us an email if you’d like to set up a session.
We’ll look forward to talking to you again via our e-news blast in April. To stay on top of what we’re up to this month, check out our new blog: http://hooksbookevents.blogspot.com. Of course, if you’d like to book one of our authors at your office – or a book salon at your home – don’t hesitate to ping us.
