MAY 2009: News from HooksBookEvents
Friday May 08, 2009

HooksBookEvents - Books LogoNews from Hooks Book Events: May 2009

With our team of great women by our sides, we have been working to produce some very interesting events in the last month. We made headlines on April 27 when we brought Cokie Roberts to the Greater Washington Board of Trade to speak about the revised and expanded version of “We Are Our Mother’s Daughters.” Washington Business Journal reporter Jennifer Nycz-Conner was on the scene and the next day wrote:“If you ever have a chance to hear Cokie Roberts speak, take it.” [Click on the link to read the entire article.]]

We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we also brought Cokie to the April 20 Excellence in Government conference where she was the keynote speaker. Federal News Radio was on the scene and interviewed Cokie – then turned the microphone on Perry Hooks, who shared her thoughts on the importance of intellectual and emotional engagement in the federal work force. The show aired Friday, April 24 and can be heard on www.federalnewsradio.com.

Below you’ll find some of the other great events we have planned for May and beyond. We hope you’ll attend our public events – and if your organization is looking to host an enlightening and intellectually invigorating session with one of our authors let us know. [Scroll down below to see the list of bestselling authors we have booked through July, and also check out our Upcoming Events on our website.]

We leave you this month with a parting thought: During World War II, the British government printed a series of posters meant to instill confidence. Our favorite is “Keep Calm and Carry On.” Cheers to that! See you in June.

SHOWING UP FOR LIFE

BillGatesSr.

We were thrilled to bring prominent lawyer, civil activist, and philanthropist William Gates Sr. to speak at Chevy Chase Trust on April 29 and at the Greater Washington Board of Trade on April 30. The co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation talked about his new book,
Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime, a heartfelt and deeply personal book that shines a bright light on the values and principles that Gates learned growing up in the Great Depression.

When asked by an audience member whether he wakes up in the morning amazed at the incredible amount of wealth his son has accumulated – and the wealth he is able to distribute through the Gates Foundation – Gates Sr. said, “Yes! It is totally stunning and I’m very conscious of the stunningness of it. And yet, I exalt in it, because those billions are going to wonderful causes and bettering people’s lives. I’m 83 years old and I never imagined that I’d be working this late in life, or enjoying it so much.”

DaraTorres

Check out this picture of the HBE staff and Dara Torres, the winner of 12 Olympic medals for swimming – five of which she won at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

We met her at the Women In Cable Telecommunications conference in April, where she launched the tour for her new book, Age is Just a Number (Random House 2009). That, of course, is one of our company mottos!

If you can figure out which young lady is Dara, let us know!
