SEPTEMBER 2009: News from HooksBookEvents
Tuesday September 15, 2009

Our fall book season is off to a roaring start with lots of great new titles, and some incredible private and public events.

We kicked off the month with the September 8th event at the Avalon Theater in D.C. with NurtureShock authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. New York Times’ bestselling author, Dan Pink, led them in a lively Q&A, and more than 100 area parents were captivated by their conversation.

Po and Ashley’s argument: when it comes to children, we’ve mistaken good intentions for good ideas. With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis they demonstrate that many of modern society’s strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring because key twists in the science have been overlooked.

As luck would have it, the authors were the cover story of Newsweek on the same day as our event.  They wrote, “We have this image that friendships in schools today are all High School Musical ─ effortless racial harmony.  But the cross-race friendships seen in HSM are just about as true to life as teens bursting into choreographed song during hoops practice.”  Read the entire article here:  www.newsweek.com.

It’s fascinating stuff, and just another example of the high caliber of authors we are privileged to bring to our public and private events. You won’t believe the other high-profile authors we’ve booked! Please keep checking our site for updates and ticket sales (www.hooksbookevents.com). We’ll look forward to seeing you soon!

Hooks Book Events Featured in Publisher’s Weekly

Talk about great book karma! On August 31st, Hooks Book Events was featured in an article in Publisher’s Weekly entitled, “Thinking Outside The Bookstore Box,” by reporter Judith Rosen.

She wrote: “A new breed of booksellers, many of whom got their start in the B2B world, are finding success by altering the traditional independent bookselling model. They retain a commitment to independent bookselling-and they influence the bestsellers by reporting their sales to the New York Times.

Perry Pidgeon Hooks of Hooks Book Events in Bethesda, Md., has a bookstore affiliation, with sales going through the registers of nearby Politics and Prose in Washington, D.C. A former marketing director at Davis-Kidd in Nashville, Hooks was hired to work on corporate sales at Politics and Prose more than a decade ago. Soon she found that she was spending so much time organizing events for government agencies like the Department of the Interior that she flopped her work and became an independent contractor, taking a commission from the store.”
